Background

The YTL development at Brabazon in Bristol is one of the most significant regeneration projects in the South West, transforming the former Filton Airfield into a world-class entertainment venue and wider mixed-use development. Within the eastern framework of the site, accurate ground modelling was essential to assess cut and fill requirements and achieve a balanced approach to earthworks. Given the scale and complexity of the site, YTL Developments required a reliable, high-accuracy aerial solution to provide volumetric data for planning and design.

Objectives

The purpose of the project was to deliver a comprehensive aerial survey and 3D modelling assessment that would quantify the site’s cut and fill requirements. The objectives included calculating accurate volume balances across the eastern framework, identifying opportunities for efficient earthworks, and ensuring that the site strategy minimised off-site material movements and associated costs. The outputs needed to integrate seamlessly with the design team’s CAD environment to support both immediate decision-making and long-term planning.

Scope of Works

The works began with a preliminary cut and fill assessment, which provided YTL Developments with an updated site volume balance for the eastern framework. This stage established a clear baseline understanding of existing ground conditions. The project then progressed to a detailed cut and fill assessment using strata volumetric modelling, which allowed the team to analyse different soil layers separately and refine earthworks planning with greater precision.

The aerial survey data was processed into a 3D CAD ground surface model and a classified point cloud, ensuring compatibility with the client’s digital workflows. Options for further parcel-specific modelling and optioneering were also included, giving YTL the flexibility to revisit and refine the data as the project advanced. All modelling was carried out by experienced engineers, ensuring accuracy and consistency throughout.

Outcome

The survey and modelling works gave YTL Developments a precise understanding of the cut and fill requirements within the Brabazon eastern framework. This insight allowed the project team to plan earthworks with confidence, making best use of on-site materials while reducing the need for costly import or disposal.
