National House BuilderClient: National House Builder Location: Former RAF Base in North London Project: Site Investigation and Remedial Strategy Design Duration: 2 weeks Value: £45,000 T&P provided geo-environmental consultancy services to support this project, which involved the conversion of an existing listed house into apartments, construction of a new apartment block with underground parking and construction of new residential properties with private gardens, from the pre-purchase budget production through to verification. The scope of the works included: Review of the existing site investigation in order to advise our client as to the likely environmental issues associated with the site and produce budget costings prior to the purchase of the site; Post purchase of the site entered into discussions with the Regulators to agree the scope of the additional investigations, which included CISED and UBM testing to support site specific risk assessments for arsenic and chromium; Installation of 26No targeted boreholes with standpipe installations followed by a three month period of gas monitoring; Excavation of 47No JCB excavated trial pits, 11No hand dug trial pits and 8No in-situ soakaway tests; Production of a combined Interpretative Site Investigation and proposed remedial strategy report. Incorporating on site ex-situ bioremediation of hydrocarbon impacted soils and the use of the Definition of Waste : Industry Code of Practice to maximise the re-use of site won material on site; Undertake verification of third party remedial works and obtain Regulatory approval and discharge of environmental related planning conditions.

The scope of the works included: DQRA using third party data, involving new Category 4 Screening Levels (C4SL) methodology prior to issue of Version 1.07 of the CLEA model; Generation of site specific assessment levels for the various different green area land-uses (residential, public open spaces – park and residential); Regulatory liaison and reporting. Results achieved included: Negation of the need for any of the formerly specified remedial action, enabling site-won soils to be employed in garden and landscaping areas. Approx. £200K client saving on groundworks and importation of alternative soils.

Initial studies demonstrated alluvial deposits of low strength underlie the site and a supplementary investigation was supervised by T&P to establish ground engineering requirements for the development. recovering undisturbed thin wall samples and conducting penetration testing within superficial deposits. Excavation of 42No trial pits with infiltration testing in 8No pits recovering disturbed samples for engineering and environmental laboratory testing; Laboratory work including chemical testing for contaminants, soil engineering classification testing; Consolidation testing in oedometer and strength testing in a triaxial cell on recovered UT100 samples; Production of a combined desk study and ground investigation report. Ground interpretation and preparation of zoned foundation plan for piling and strip footings Optioneering for ground improvement measures and specification for surcharging and use of band drains. Site InvestigationClient: Project management consultancy on behalf of the airport operator Location: South east UK Project: Site Investigation on an operational airport Duration: 1 week Value: £20,000 T&P were commissioned to undertake the airside investigation followed by the production of a factual report. The scope of the works included: Prior to commencement of the intrusive investigations in addition undertaking a services search a geophysical survey was carried out due to the potential risk of unidentified buried ordnance; The investigations comprised 5No cable percussive boreholes to between 5.0m and 10.0m deep, with gas and groundwater monitoring standpipes installed in each; Excavation of 19No targeted trial pits and trenches to depths ranging from 3.0m to 4.0m begl; Production of engineering logs for all exploratory holes; Undertake chemical and geotechnical testing of selected soil samples Production of a factual report detailing the findings of the investigations
